Fishtrap Earrings (Gold Ball Bearings)
It’s not often that I am able to set aside some time to create completely new work — things that stand apart from my usual line and challenge my skills as a jeweler. These earrings are the beginning of a new series I’ve been considering for a couple of years now. They are inspired by the craftsmanship found in a simple tool used by people for hundreds of years: fish traps created by using bound saplings. The forms of these devices intrigue me and I love that they were designed to let something in without sealing it in completely.
The intricate sterling silver wire construction connects to form a channel. I’ve replaced the fish with 14k gold ball bearings that you can watch roll around freely inside the form (you can even hear them rolling while you wear them). These earrings are made of silver wire, making them light to wear. Although they appear very delicate, there are 98 solder joints in each pair, so they are quite sturdy, and the balls are held inside very securely. At the top, hinged sterling silver ear wires connect with a secure click into their corresponding handmade catch.
I loved the challenge of making these: the precision measurements needed to allow the balls to move without letting them fall out; the engineering involved in making these forms stiff and durable; and the placement of each wire to make the overall form aesthetically pleasing as well as functional.
Approximately 1.25" in diameter.
This is a limited edition piece.
Securely shipped via USPS Priority Mail within 1-2 days of receipt of payment.
